Five years ago, we commissioned Jonathan Dove to write a major new work. The result was Sappho Sings, a setting of six poem fragments by the classical Greek poet, Sappho, in new translations by Alasdair Middleton. We gave it its premiere in March 2019.
After a pandemic-related delay, we are now going to record it on 25 June 2022 with the London Mozart Players, for release by Convivium Records online and as a CD in early 2023.
We love Sappho Sings, and believe passionately that a recording is vitally important to bring it to a wider audience. Nevertheless, for us this is a big financial commitment. We need your donations to make it happen.
Our total budget for the recording is £12,900, of which we anticipate we can fund £8,900 from our own resources, leaving us to raise £4,000. We have started a campaign on the crowdfunding platform IndieGoGo to help us do this. In return for your donation, you will receive one of a tiered series of rewards. These range from receiving a copy of the CD, and of the vocal score signed by our musical director Ralph Woodward, Jonathan Dove and Alasdair Middleton, up to attending the recording session in London.
Your contribution will help us to make this wonderful piece of music and a new translation of this exciting classical text accessible to everyone.
